we spent that
summer curled
around each
other like vines in
the hazy
light of an old
steel town, our
skin permanently
wet and
freckling, my
hair grown
so long i thought
i might never
cut it off
and this was
before
i left, before i
got covered by
grasshoppers and
saw a bear and
feared a real life
tornado because the
sky turned
green above me and
before i handed
my heart
over tied up
in a bow
to other boys with
your initials
carved small
in the corner

noon

i shoveled pancakes
and coffee into my fat face
at village deli,
then sweat through
mid-day August
in dusty running shorts
with no underwear,
hiding a hard-on
half the time.

six

unpacked my bed,
hysterically arranging,
rearranging,
and smashing spiders
with crumpled sports sections.
